Michael Crofoot Archives

Las Placitas Association has negotiated to maintain an in-perpetuity library of Michel Crofoot’s writing about Placitas plants, herbs, geology, native seeds, seed ball creation, herbarium, native plant locations, and erosion control. These papers will be preserved and available to the community as they are edited and matched with illustrations.  For those of you who do not know Michael Crofoot, he is a local plant expert who moved to Placitas twenty years ago. He has worked in the botany and soil microbiology fields for many years and loves our enchanting northern Sandia foothills. Health issues have resulted in his relocation first to the Pacific Northwest (a much lower altitude) and currently Mexico. We felt that Michael’s writings should not be lost with his relocation. Among his writings is a 160-plant species Herbarium specific to the Placitas area. Our goal is to publish something semi-annually, beginning with recommended wildflowers for Placitas pollinators (See Native Plants) and trees suitable for our locale (see LPA-NativeTrees-edited).  Michael lives a life full of nature, poetry and music. Listen to KUPR’s interview with Michael here.

Harmony with land is like harmony with a friend; you cannot cherish his right hand and chop off his left. That is to say, you cannot love game and hate predators… The land is one organism.
