The purpose of Las Placitas Association is to promote community awareness and preserve the rural and historical values that make the community an attractive place to live; to promote community cohesion; to preserve, protect and utilize land, air, space, water and historical and cultural resources for the benefit of all of us; to sponsor community improvement projects; to participate in and provide expressions of community views to regional planning groups and governmental agencies at all levels.
Environmental historian Donald Worster said “Learn where you are. Learn about this place and its history. Learn not only the history of its people
but the history of the land itself, its deep history. Learn to adapt your ideas and institutions to that land. Learn to work together if you mean to endure.”
Did you know Placitas has its very own FM radio station, owned by Las Placitas Association and operated by a volunteer Radio Advisory Council? Listen to KUPR, 99.9 on your FM dial, or streaming on the internet at kupr.org! (click here for details)

The trail which is made up of two parts after the first 1/2 mile mark where you can do the 1.2 mile Cave Loop Trail which is easy and returns you back to the parking lot at the trail head after viewing a cave from the pathway. The more difficult, but certainly worth the effort is the 1.5 mile hike up the Canyon Trail which is a slot canyon with unique geologic features found only here and in Turkey. You can at this point retrace your steps back to the parking lot or continue to climb some 630 feet to the mesa top to get some great views of the Jemez, Sangre de Cristo, Sandia mountains and the Rio Grande Valley.
We will meet at the Merc parking lot at 8:55 on Sunday 24 Sep for a 9 o’clock departure. Wear good hiking shoes/boots, sunscreen and a hat. We will provide the water.
